Women's Ministry - Feeling the Spirit!
Through the guidance and blessing of the Holy Spirit, the women’s ministry at St. George’s continues to nourish us in body, mind, and spirit. Through Bible studies, the Women’s Retreat, times of fellowship, or Outreach, we grow together as sisters in Christ.
We have 2-3 social events through the year. These events do not have any program associated with them, as they are simply a time for us to come together, relax, chat, catch up, and, of course, eat! Our events include Chick Flicks, covered dish dinners, ceramic painting, and a ladies tea.
Our annual women’s retreat is held the next to last weekend in April. We have been doing this for 10 years, meeting in the beautiful and tranquil shore town of Ocean Grove. The retreat is not a weekend away with the girls. No, it is much (much) more than that. Lives are changed. Relationships are restored. The Holy Spirit works in a mighty way.
The retreat runs from Friday evening through Sunday lunch and consists of at least 3 teachings, 3 times of worship, small group time, and healing prayer. There’s plenty of time built in for a stroll through the Victorian town and a walk on the beach. Starting in 2016, by request of those attending the prior retreats, we will begin Friday afternoon, adding another block of time for teaching and a small group session. God is good!
Two Women’s Bible studies have been active this year. One is on Wednesday mornings at 10AM. This study runs from September through May. The second study is held on Saturday mornings at 9AM and is held every 6 weeks. This study is of ten “bad girls of the Bible” and what we can learn from them.
On the Wednesday in Holy Week the women gather in the church to give it a “spring” cleaning. With some Murphy’s Soap and a little “oomph” the many feet of dark wood of the pews, wainscoting, and paneling begin to shine. Cobwebs don’t stand a chance against our dusters and vacuums.
One other ministry outreach for the women is the occasional preparation of lunch for the children of South County Day Care. As their bellies are filled with chicken fingers and fries, the sweet smiling faces of the children fill our hearts with joy.
Our Christmas covered dish dinner is always a highlight as we pull out the “dressy dresses” and bring our best “company” dish. We decorate Ericson Hall with the colors of the season and use the white linens and china. Our wonderful men handle all of the cleanup.
